The Blaise Senghor Cultural Center of Dakar, or CCBS for short, was created in 1972.

It is located in a densely populated neighborhood, which houses numerous educational and research institutions, such as the Cheikh Anta Diop University, the oldest and most important university in the country.

The CCBS, as an instrument for the decentralization of the Ministry of Culture, is responsible for implementing the cultural policy of the State of Senegal in the Dakar region.

As such, it articulates the cultural initiatives and concentrates the cultural services of the four (04) departments of the region: Dakar, Pikine, Rufisque and Guédiawaye, thus reaching all the cities, communes and neighborhoods of the Senegalese capital.

Among other things, the Cultural Center provides professional organizations, associations and other local cultural actors with technical support, services, advice and training. It serves as a framework for artistic experiments and productions, proposes workshops and exchanges on themes inspired by the major cultural issues of our time.

The CCBS also organizes visits to tourist and cultural sites, offers or hosts shows and exhibitions.

The Blaise Senghor Cultural Center is a showcase of excellence within the continuous hive of the region’s cultural agenda and fosters the national and international cultural influence of all local authorities.

It works in close synergy with the Cabinet and Directorates of the Ministry of Culture and Communication (DA, DLL, DPC, DCI, PCA, SORANO, MCDS, ON, GNA, MRA…), partners, sponsors and patrons.

Some tools to achieve good performance

The audiovisual unit:

The audiovisual unit helps artists, especially new talents, to create video clips. It contributes to cultural visibility at the regional and national level.

Several documentaries have been made thanks to it: on the Sédhiou cultural days, on traditional music such as “taxuraan”, on the Kédougou Minorities Festival, on “djalonké” and “bédik” dances, etc.

The studio

It is a rehearsal and recording studio.

The studio has supported musical artists who have become famous in Senegal in their musical careers, such as Alioune Mbaye NDER, Marie Ngoné DIONE, Tidiane Dieuf Jel, the CEDDO des HLM group, rap groups, etc.

Infrastructure (spaces and building)

The Blaise Senghor Cultural Center has a number of infrastructures, such as a library with more than 12,000 books, two courtyards with more than 150 seats each, an esplanade, a performance hall (200 seats), an exhibition hall and an esplanade with more than 700 seats.

All these venues host music, dance and theater performances or serve as rehearsal spaces for various organizations.

The Blaise Senghor Cultural Center also has a restaurant called Espace Demba Ndiaye, former director of the Center.

To carry out its mission, the Center has an organizational chart composed of five areas of specialization:

  • Area 1: Live/visual arts: performing arts, shows, music, drama (theater, storytelling, puppetry), dance and choreography, painting, sculpture, photography, video art, design, fashion…
